Looking Back on 2011 UCA Camp

We had a great time at camp. Everyone worked so hard. In the end, we came home with the following awards:

Leadership Award

2nd in the Home Dance Routine

3rd in the Cheer Division

All-Star Award
         Candace S. (Senior)

Pin-In-Forward Award

Brooke N. (Sophmore), Received from Staff

Candace S. (Senior), Received from a Different School's Squad Member

Leadership Award

There are a variety of awards handed out on the final day, but the one campers always strive for is the Leadership Award. What makes this award unique is that the award isn’t chosen by the staff, it is chosen by the other squads who attended the camp.

The Leadership Award is given to the squad who shows good leadership skills, school spirit, is friendly to the other teams, and has a great attitude. When the squads are voting the instructors will tell the campers to think of a squad at camp that you would want to be on. The award is also explained as a coach’s ideal team. They not only do what they are asked, they go above and beyond what is asked of them.

All-American Award

Several of the girls competed for the honor of being named a UCA All-American Cheerleader. They perform the Cheer and Dance they learned at camp. They also show their best jump. One of our captains and seniors, Candace Stingley, was chosen. She has earned the opportunity to travel to London, England to participate in the 2012 New Year's Day Parade there with hundreds of other girls from the USA.

Pin-In-Forward

Before camp starts, each instructor is given two pins. On the first two days of camp, it’s the instructor’s job to seek out the cheerleaders who demonstrate one or more of the reasons why American Needs Cheerleaders, including, but not limited to: leadership, spirit, commitment to excellence, kindness and motivation. Then, at the end of day two, during spirit sticks/awards, each instructor will give their two pins to the participants who meets this criteria.

At the end of the third day, the ‘pinned’ cheerleaders will give their extra pin to a cheerleader on a different team who also exemplified those values. An example of this could be a squad staying late to help pick up, giving good criticism to another squad or team member, or cheering on another team.

I can't begin to say how proud of everyone I am. Most of the girls this year have never done anything like this before. You wouldn't have known it by watching them. I received several compliments from not only the staff, but other coaches and squad members over the 4 days.

Coach Maggie
